Rob has been telling me for a long time about the awesome hike up
Adams Canyon to the waterfalls, and we finally tackled it yesterday. In the picture above, we had hiked as far as the benchline and were ready to head into the canyon. The trail follows Holms Creek up to two or three waterfalls (depending on your definition of waterfall...I say three). It's about a 3 1/2 mile round trip. The last waterfall is about 40 feet tall and is holy cow incredible.
This is a great time of year to hike because the vegetation is so green. Here we are heading into the canyon towards the creek. Rob's been on this trail before but it was my first time. He was a fantastic guide - completely in his prime (I told him to appreciate that) and moving along like it was a Sunday stroll. I, on the other hand, was huffing and puffing, cuz there are times when we were actually scrambling up the mountain on rocks. Today my muscles are aching! It was a good workout and I'm sure I burned off all the M&Ms I ate during the day at work. That was my objective, you know.
The trail finally catches up to the creek, and from here on up the rushing creek will be our companion. This is probably the most water it holds all year, with the spring runoff still in full force. Talk about some powerful water. And so beautiful.
Along the way there are a few places where the trees clear and we can see the sky. The photo below was taken at a camp site where there is a huge log laying in front of a fire pit. Someone has cut out a couple of places in the log to form seats. I was too enthralled with the sky to think about taking a picture of what I was sitting on. So use your imagination for what the log looks like. :)
This is a huge evergreen tree that Rob likes to hug. Yes, he's a tree hugger.
And this is one of Rob's other favorite places to be along the way...
And it's a waterfall!...
This is above the waterfall from the side. Holy cow. That rock is just barely touching on its bottom where the water rushes around it!
And a second waterfall (which usually isn't a waterfall, according to Rob, but is now cuz of the runoff).
So you can see from the picture above that we still have some rock climbing UP UP UP to do before we hit the third waterfall. Yep, at this point, I am really huffing and puffing. But I hung in there and made it to the top, only to find...
That I couldn't get to the waterfall! (See the blue rope blocking hikers from crossing the water?) Unless I was a monkey, like Rob, and could climb around the rock with the rushing water below me and get to the other side. Which I am not, and in which I did not do. However, I did get brave enough to wade in far enough to peek around the corner and see the magnificent fall. It was dang beautiful to see and absolutely scary to be standing there in that rushing water! No way I could get my camera out. I guess it was I who paved the way, cuz then the Robster started scaling the rock. He was out of sight for way too long, but came back finally with this photo he took from his phone, hanging from the other side of the rock!
And how he got back with his phone still in his possession, I still wonder til this moment. Anyone who knows Rob's track record with phones, will understand.
Phew! It was exciting at the top. And that is one spectacular waterfall! So glad I got to see it.
Did I mention that it was Grand Central Station along the way? There were several big groups hiking up, at least 50 more people.
And then we began the descent. A little stopping time for contemplation while I snapped away at the water.
Rob called it right, too. He thought that we would get down just in time for the sunset and we were rewarded beautifully!
